Derived from the concept of a song I wrote three years ago of the same name, Coequal deals with the topic of racial equality. Illustrating a line in the song, we're all pumping the same human blood", I took it quite literally and decided to show the peeling back of two individuals with contrasting skin complexion to show that despite the colour of our skin, we all look the same underneath. We are all made up of the same fundamental organs and blood which does not differ in colour from race to race. We are all just human.
In the painting, both hands are tightly gripping each other as a way of symbolizing races coming together as one.
